How to read a CAS (Consolidated Account Statement)
What a mutual fund CAS contains, the difference between CAMS, KFintech and depository statements, and what to check first.
What a CAS is
A Consolidated Account Statement lists your mutual fund holdings and transactions across fund houses, linked to your PAN. The main registrars, CAMS and KFintech, issue it for mutual fund folios. NSDL and CDSL issue a consolidated statement for holdings kept in demat form.
Detailed or summary
A summary shows only current holdings. A detailed statement also lists every transaction, which is what you need to work out returns such as XIRR.
What to check first
Look at each scheme's name and plan (direct or regular, growth or IDCW), your folio number, the units held, the latest NAV and the valuation date. Then scan the transactions for SIP instalments, redemptions and switches.
Why it matters
The statement is the record of what you actually own. Reviewing it once a year helps you spot forgotten folios, duplicate schemes and nominee details that need updating.
Keep it private
A CAS contains personal details. Share it only with people you trust and who have your consent.
